Vagal Nerve, helping to support Stress & Anxiety
March 2015 I embarked on a Vagus Nerve Practioner diploma. I was aware that the ‘Vagal Nerve’ seemed the new buzz word, so I investigated a litte deeper. The whole subject resonanted with me so I decided to study the subject.
As I worked my way through the diploma I realised that all my holisitic treatments I offer also helped to support & stimulate the Vagus Nerve!
So what is the Vagus Nerve?
The Vagus Nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, extending from the brain stem to the abdomen.
Every time you breath, speak or swallow you use the vagus nerve.
The main cause of poor Vagul nerve function is stress, fatigue, overwhelm & anxiety.
The Vagus Nerve comes into action when we are in the rest & digest mode -the parasympathetic nervous system. It sends signals to promote relaxation, reduce inflammation, & to help reset the nervous system after a stress response.
The Vagus Nerve can slow down the heart rate & lower blood pressure.
It also plays an important role in stimulating the digestive system, & aiding in the absorption of nutrients.
The Vagal Nerve sends anti-inflammatory signals to the body helping to reduce inflammation & promote healing
By regulating the nervous system, the Vagus Nerve can contribute to improved mood, stress reduction & a sense of calmness.
The list goes on, but I now have the knowledge & skills to offer techniques for Vagal Nerve activation.
Next time you feel stressed or anxious trying ‘HUMMING’ - the Vagal nerve is near the vocal cord & ear drum, so when we hum, sing or gargle is will stimulate the Vagal Nerve.
